Lake Rhodhiss was built in 1925. The Rhodhiss dam is 65 feet high and 1,500 feet long. A fully recreational lake, Rhodhiss has 90 miles of shoreline and a surface area of approximately 3,060 acres. Full pond elevation is 995.1 feet. Lake Rhodhiss is also a reliable source of water for the nearby cities of Granite Falls, Lenoir, Morganton and Valdese, North Carolina. Duke Energy provides four boat access areas and one bank fishing area on the lake in cooperation with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
Blowing Rock, North Carolina
Blowing Rock is a town in North Carolina, which is located in Caldwell and Watauga counties. The population was 1,192 at the 2010 census. The town of Blowing Rock takes its name from an unusual rock formation which juts over 1,500 feet (460 m) above the Johns River gorge. Due to the rock’s shape and size, wind currents from the gorge often blow vertically, causing light objects to float upwards into the sky. Blowing Rock is the site of Glen Burney Falls and Glen Marie Falls. Another tourist attraction in Blowing Rock is the Tweetsie Railroad theme park, which is home to the only remaining fully functional steam engine train in North Carolina. Visitors to Tweetsie can ride the train for three miles and enjoy the mountain scenery; the park also contains traditional amusement-park rides and attractions. Other attractions in the Blowing Rock area include the elegant and historic Green Park Inn, Mystery Hill, the Blowing Rock Country Club, and the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum.
Boone, North Carolina
Boone is a town located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina. Boone’s population was 17,122 in 2010. Boone is the county seat of Watauga County and the home of Appalachian State University. The town is named for famous American pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone, and every summer since 1952 has hosted an outdoor amphitheatre portrayal of the life and times of its namesake. In 2012, Boone was listed among the 10 best places to retire in the U.S. by U.S. News.
Hickory, North Carolina
Hickory is a North Carolina, United States city located primarily in Catawba County, with parts in the adjoining counties of Burke County and Caldwell County. The city’s 2012 estimated population is 40,093. Hickory is also home to one of the oldest furniture manufacturers in the United States that is still located and operated on the original site. Hickory White, formerly known as Hickory Manufacturing Company, was built in 1902 and has been in continuous operation ever since. During World War II, the factory made ammunition boxes for the U.S. Military instead of furniture. Hickory has been named an “All-America City” three times. The All-America City Award is given annually to only ten cities in the United States. It is a very prestigious award that represents a community’s ability to work together and achieve critical local issues. Hickory won this award in 2007, as well as 1967 and 1987.
